How to Remove Mold On Drywall Surfaces

Probably you are like most homeowners that keep finding molds in their homes every now and then. Though you may have taken measures to get rid of them they kept coming back. Knowingly, not only they cause health-related allergy problems they can also reduce the value and overall appeal of your property in Naples, Florida.

Molds thrive on different types of materials including wood, cement, and even metals. What’s the worst part is that they love drywalls, and possibly most part of your house is made of drywalls! Drywall is found in the living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and even on home-based offices of every home.

We at Smith Plastering, your Naples Drywall company, shares some tips on how to handle and remove molds on your drywall surfaces. Smith Plastering, since 1997, is a family-owned and operated business specializing in exterior and interior drywall finishes of residences and commercial buildings in Southwest Florida. Below some considerations every homeowner should know about mold removal on drywalls to prevent mold damage to your property:

How Mold Grows on Drywall

Molds can grow on several types of surfaces depending on the surface moisture. Drywalls, also known as plasterboards, or wallboards are made from wood, and they the perfect source of nutrition for molds to grow. Molds are tiny living organisms that also in need of food and water to survive. They thrive on the fiber particles of drywalls for its nutrition and spreads out to other sources of food for its needs.

What’s worse, if the molds reach your HVAC system where its spores will quickly spread out and can go airborne. Thankfully, this problem is manageable, however, you should be careful in handling the molds to avoid complications and further damage to your property.

Why Mold is Dangerous on Drywall

There are several reasons why molds are considered high risks and hazardous for your home :

Reason No. 1: Molds can cause allergic reactions.

Mold spores can cause allergic reactions when you inhaled, touch your skin, or penetrate your eyes. Once mold spores come in contact with a person, the body may react defensively by producing antibodies or expelling foreign substances through coughing, sneezing, wheezing, runny nose, or watery eyes.

Reason No. 2: Molds can spread easily.

Since drywall has smooth surface molds can easily spread out. It can thrive on drywall surfaces by multiplying itself exponentially, as long as there is nutrition for its growth. Mold spores are dangerous since they can become airborne and spread all over the house including the HVAC system, crawlspaces, and even on furniture.

Reason No. 3: Molds can damage house structures.

Molds behind walls can cause damages to the structural foundations of your house. Molds on walls unnoticed for a long time can rot the insides of drywalls, which eventually can collapse your house’s structures and foundations. Additionally, molds can make your walls aesthetically unpleasant and unsightly as they kept on feeding on the drywalls through rotting.

Reason No. 4: Molds can drain your house maintenance budget

Molds thriving behind walls are costly and time-consuming. As molds eat up the wood and drywall through rotting, this can be costly since you would be required to repair and keep re-painting the walls, draining your home budget and wasting much of your precious time on the unnecessary project.

Reason No. 5: Molds can devalue your home selling property

If you are planning to sell your house, molds growing at the back of your walls can decrease your house value. Any buyer who discovers your walls with molds will definitely turn off to buy your property. Or possibly, if they do found out they would use it as a reason to lower the price as a bargaining power since you are selling a half-baked property.

How to Remove Mold from Drywall

Here are some steps you can do to remove molds from your walls:

Step 1: Manage and control mold spores from spreading out by using plastic sheets during the cleaning process

Step 2: Distinctly mark the areas affected by molds.

Step 3: Cut out the affected areas on your drywall using a utility knife. Just make sure you cut out two of the wooden beams behind the drywall.

Step 4: Remove the affected drywall section- mold-side up.

Step 5: Use a HEPA vacuum to clean and remove mold spores.

Step 6: Replace the drywall. If you still have a budget paint the backside of the new section of the drywall as well.

How to Hire the Best Painting Contractor in Naples, Florida

Any Naples local painter can pick up a brush and paint. This is well and good for small jobs like painting a small section of the wall or old beat-up furniture. When it comes to more significant projects, what homeowners in Naples, Florida need is not just someone who knows how to paint, but a reliable, professional contractor.

Looking for the best painting contractor in Naples, Florida sounds like a simple enough task. This may have been true years ago when the number of options is limited, and all you had to do was pick up the yellow pages and choose one. But in a day and age where you can find everything online, and you are faced with endless possibilities, choosing one could feel like looking for a needle in the haystack. Needless to say, you must whittle them down systematically.

Fortunately, if going online can confuse you with too many options, prudent and methodical searching can also lead you to the right choice, starting with this guide on how to find the best painting contractor in Naples, Florida.

Experience in the industry
No Naples professional painter would stay operational for years on end without achieving some level of success. Run-of-the-mill businesses come and go, but the good ones endure. This is your first indication of how stable and reliable a painting contractor is. A contractor, especially a local one, that has managed to stay in business for many years, is trusted by enough customers who are more than willing to keep paying for their services. It is an indication of the high quality of their work and the satisfaction it brings to their clients.

Legitimate, professional operation
Florida requires any individual or group in the construction contractor business to be state-certified by having a county license of competency. Contractors are required to apply for a sponsorship in the county and pass a trade examination given by recognized testing agencies as part of their requirements.

After passing the exam, Naples painting contractors are also asked to get insurance for personal liability or property damage and submit credit reports and other relevant documents. All of this helps to ensure that the client is protected, as well as the contractor.

Being certified or licensed is another way for you to check if a contractor’s operation is legitimate or not, aside from their years of experience.

Feedback from previous clients
One way to gauge the quality of a contractor’s work is the honest assessment of prior clients. You can look for them on the contractor’s website, which has testimonials and reviews, or you can look up independent review forums on websites such as Angie’s List and Yelp.
Alternatively, you can ask the contractors themselves for a list of references. A legitimate contractor should have no problem providing you with the details of at least three previous clients. This way, you can inspect for yourself the actual quality of their work and talk to people who have personally dealt with the contractor.

Trust your instinct
Once you have narrowed down the list and talked to the contractors themselves, it is time for the more subjective part of your decision-making. How comfortable are you about the way they handled your inquiries? Can you trust their guarantee of satisfaction?

Sometimes, something as simple as looking at a website where you can actually see the faces of the contractors is enough to gain your trust. It is a sign of their accountability, saying this is us, we got you covered. This is much better for your peace mind, instead of dealing with a faceless organization.

The best painting contractor in Florida
Smith Plastering is the best Naples painting company in Florida. They have well-trained and experienced painters who have excellent attention to detail and see a job through from start to finish. They are a locally-owned company with over two decades of commitment to quality workmanship and customer satisfaction.

Metal Wall Framing: What Is It and How it is Done?

What is wall framing?
Wall framing is the process of putting together construction materials to hold up and give shape to a wall. Framing for a plain wall consists of the top and bottom plates that run horizontally along the entire length of the wall and the studs running vertically from the bottom plate to the top, creating a framework. The shorter jack and jamb studs are used where there are openings like windows and doors. Other components like the lintel, noggings, and bracing provide additional strength to the structure.

Wood vs. metal
The wood used to be the primary material used in wall framing, but metal framing is steadily gaining popularity over the years. One of its advantages is resistance to fire, which houses from places with warmer climates like Florida would benefit from. With a metal framing installation Naples, Florida homeowners could rest assured that there would be fewer materials to stoke a fire. Other benefits from galvanized metal framing Naples, Florida residents could expect, is that steel is no fodder for termites or mold, and it is impervious to corrosion.

How metal framing is done
Working with a perfectly straight steel stud is easier than with wood. Also, steel does not shrink or split, so you can be sure there are no surprises in later stages of construction or even after. You will find that putting up a flawlessly straight wall each and every time is possible using metal and the following steps for Naples metal framing:

1. The first step in Naples metal framing installation is arming yourself with the proper tools. You can either rent or buy the following:
· Impact drivers and screw guns to connect metal studs together
· Metal cut-off circular saw
· Nibblers and snips for cutting corrugated metals or flanges and trim studs
· Plasma cutting machine for creating openings for running cables and conduits
· Measuring and layout devices like level and measure lasers and plumb bob
· C-clamp locking pliers for temporarily securing metal studs together

2. Layout then attach the wall frame
· Mark the location of the wall on the floor then install the bottom plate or track. Next, use the plumb bob or level to find the matching position of the top track on the ceiling then fasten it.
· There should be enough studs to allow no more than 12 inches of linear wall space in between them. Cut these anchor studs to fit the distance between the top and bottom track. Do not allow gaps of more than 1/16 of an inch as this will transfer some of the load on the screws.
NOTE: Do not lay a bottom track over door openings as you would not be able to cut it later in the construction
· Secure the metal studs to the tracks using the c-clamps then drive in the screws at the point where the studs and track meet.
· Lay down electrical cable through the center of the studs and secure with plastic ties. Make sure each knockout has a plastic bushing to prevent the sharp edges of the studs from cutting the wire.
· Add wood blocking where doors, windows, and cabinets would go.
· Lastly, install the drywall sheets or sheathings. Start on one side by standing one drywall sheet against the wall; the other edge should be in the middle of a metal stud. Trim the drywall sheet to match the height of the metal framing. Then drive self-tapping drywall screw to secure the sheet into the stud. Repeat the process until the entire wall is covered.

Aside from the many advantages of steel over wood in wall framing, metal wall framing is relatively easy and can be done even by novice builders. Alternatively, there is one metal framing contractor Naples homeowners could rely on – Smith Plastering, Inc.
